By infusing contemporary graphics with a classic sensibility, Susi Oberhelman creates designs that endure. Oberhelman began her design business as a sideline in 1990. After notable tenures as art director for Smallwood & Stewart packagers and Artisan, the illustrated division of Workman Publishing, she committed to her own company full-time in 1998. Among its clients, SVO Graphic Design includes Aperture, HarperCollins, Hearst Books, Simon & Schuster, Stewart, Tabori & Chang, Clarkson Potter, and Rizolli. Although gift-book design accounts for the majority of its business, the firm continues to expand. Oberhelman has developed corporate identities, personal stationery, and promotional items. Within her first year as an independent, she received the Maggie Award for Magazine Design, for Flavors, the full-color quarterly for Whole Foods Market. Her work has also been recognized by the American Institute of Graphic Design.
